But when Tatchi fails to return home after a family emergency, and no one knows where the family has gone, Ash chooses to do something drastic to find them.

Ashlyn is about to discover what she’d thought to be true her whole life, wasn’t, and the truth, too fantastical to imagine. Secrets lurk beneath the deep blue waters of Lake Tahoe, secrets that will change Ashlyn’s life forever.

Review

Ashlyn and Tatiana are best friends, they do everything together. But one day Tatiana and her family suddenly disappear and Ashlyn isn’t able to reach Tatiana on her phone either. What in the world could have happened? Did something bad happen to them? Otherwise Tatiana would have called her, wouldn’t she? Ashlyn has a hard time passing the next couple of weeks without her best friend. And so many things seem to happen at the moment! She, the “normal one” has been nominated for Queen and the hottest hunk of the school has asked her to be his date! She doesn’t know what to do, especially since she has a secret crush on Tatiana’s twin brother Finley. Where is your best friend when you need her the most??

Finley has a hard time to keep his distance from Ashlyn, the hardest part is not kissing her, cause she’ll be his forever if he does. How great this thought might be, he can’t bring her back to his world. He is in fact a merman! But then he and his family are suddenly called away from the gate to Natatoria, the city where the merpeople live. Fin’s father has to perform a mission for the king and mermaids aren’t allowed on land without a merman of age to go with them. So Finley and Tatiana have no other choice than to move to Natatoria, something they clearly don’t want to.

Once they arrive Finley is scheduled to train in the army, under the leadership of prince Azor, who has a crush on his sister. Tatiana, however, wants to have nothing to do with Azor and he punishes Finley for this. After a while Finley has enough of it and asks for a transfer. He ends up doing chores for elder merpeople, something even more boring. Therefore he slips away during one of his tasks to Lake Tahoe, their home, and arrives just in time to save Ashlyn from drowning. The only problem is he had to kiss her. And with that kiss he puts a chain reaction in motion and nobody knows what the consequences might be…

Mermaids? Lately I’ve come across a couple of books with mermaids in it, but never bothered reading them. I like land animals much and much more, especially werewolves ;). Who wants to read about a fish? Although I have no problem watching The Little Mermaid ;). But when I read this blurb I decided to take a leap of faith and I’m so glad I did!

It was amazing to read about the mermaids en merman! I’d never thought it could be as interesting to read about a bunch of fish 😉 The world is full of details and the customs are extensively documented. They even thought of waterproof bags, so they won’t have to walk around naked or with wet clothes all the time (although I don’t think I would’ve mind that 😉 ). The kiss, however, wasn’t my cup of tea, since I like the idea of soul mates a lot more than one coincidental touching of the lips and you’re stuck with the other person till the end of days, even when you hate the other person. Not a real romantic setting 😉

One of the surprising events in this book is that, even when Fin and Ash like each other from the beginning, they don’t react on it and even find other people. When I read that, I even thought for a while that they both would go their own way, with their new loves. Very confusing since you read the story through Fin’s and Ash’s eyes. You can at least expect them to end up together, right? That’s why I hated their new flames from the beginning, although Fin and Ashley both don’t treat them as they should be treated at the end.

Overall rating 4 hearts. What a great story! I loved the world where the merpeople where living, with al their customs and traditions. Although I didn’t like all the traditions they had 😉 I loved reading this story and look forward to how it continues. Sadly I’ll have to wait for a while since the sequel hasn’t been published yet ;(
