In Waterfall, American teenager Gabi Betarrini accidently finds herself in Fourteenth-Century Italy . . . Knights. Swords. Horses. Armor. And Italian hotties. Most American teens want an Italian vacation, but the Betarrini sisters have spent every summer of their lives there with their archaeologist parents. Stuck on yet another hot, dusty dig, they are bored out of their minds… until they place their hands atop handprints in an ancient tomb and find themselves catapulted into the Fourteenth Century and in the middle of a fierce battle between knights bent on killing one another.

Gabi’s mother is an archaeologist, who travels with her daughters through Italy in search of Etruscan burial grounds and her mother just found a new, very important one. Gabi and her little sister Lia would love to watch how the inside of the tombs looks like, which haven’t been seen by human eyes for centuries, but they are not allowed to do so before everything has been recorded. When they do sneak into one of them, they discover a peculiar wall painting of two hands. The hands are the same size as the hands of Gabi and Lia, they even feel warm when they touch them! But when Gabi and Lia have their hands on the wall painting at the same time, they suddenly see the trees outside shrink and grow again. When a shocked Gabi rips her hand of the wall painting to grab Lia, she’s suddenly alone in the tomb….

Then she hears sounds of sword fighting coming from outside the tomb. As she climbs out of the tombs, she actually sees two groups of knights fighting! At first she thinks it’s a play they are practicing for, untill one of the knights dies and she knows she just went back in time. The fighting knights notice her a second later and one of them goes to her, with his sword pointing at her, asking if she is a witch, because of her peculiar clothing. Fortunately, she is saved by the leader of the other group, the handsome Marcello Forelli. He takes her with him to his castle, but not everyone is glad she arrived…

With Marcello’s help she tries to find her sister, so she can go back to her own time, since they can only travel when both of their hands are on the wall painting. A couple of days and futile searches later, she finds out that the Paratores, the enemies of the Forelli’s and whose leader pointed his sword on her when she arrived, have her sister. The only way to get her back is to betray the Forelli’s, a difficult choice, since she developed feelings for Marcello in the mean time….

WOW! What a story! Right from the first page it swept me up and wouldn’t let go of me until I finished it ( definitely at the cost of my sleep 😉 ) Gabi feels like she may actually exist somewhere on this plane, so believable where her reactions and what she did (although she can go over the top 😉 ). The author also paid attention to how it is possible Gabi knows so much about the era and how she’s able to speak with everyone. In the time travel books I’ve read so far, not all authors made that part very plausible (which annoys me very much, since I hate it when it’s not logical). Lisa T. Bergren gave me the feeling that she actually put herself in the shoes of a 21 century girl who suddenly finds herself in the Middle Ages and the result is wonderful! Marcello is a real knight in shining armor, just as they used to come by in the middle ages 😉 Loved reading about him and how he coped with Gabi’s 21st century reactions about certain things ^^

I’m also glad to finally read a book where the “lady” doesn’t wait for her prince to come to the rescue (although she appreciates it when he does come 😉 ) and it was funny to read how Marcello and the man at the castle reacted when they found out about her latest antic. The secondary characters are also very entertaining, like Luca, Marcello’s cousin. He’s always got a couple of nice remarks ready when Gabi does something strange again.

My overall rating of this book couldn’t be anything less than 5 hearts, it was that good! I even bought the second book right after finishing this one (okay the morning after I finished it, since it was in the middle of the night 😉 ), since I just had to know how the story continues and that doesn’t happen often. Therefore I sincerely recommend this book to anyone who loves romance, time travel and the Middle Ages!
